Composition Series is a new media installation project as a tribute to vibrant movements of electronic music scenes in East Asian cities including Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei and so on. The aim of this project is to create a physical presence of music, culture and people in an architectural form.
The design of structure was inspired by Pithoprakta, a score created by Iannis Xenakis between 1955 and 1956, which had shown a new way of composing music. This score composes the sounds in a purely physical and mathematical way freed from a conventional five line staff system. The deconstructive attitude of Iannis Xenakis towards the conventional system resembles an approach of East Asian Electronic Musicians who invited western ways of composing electronic music however has been trying to establish their own methods.
This composition series is designed to express pure dynamism using basic elements, dots, lines, planes, spaces, lights and sounds from scratch. As the series proceeds, the structure itself gets consecutively deconstructed. Each time it expresses different energies as different pieces of music. It is a physical and environmental interpretation of music score which is played in a finite time and space. From Composition I to X, the series has been installed and played in ten different spaces in multiple cities holding different periods of time. This series of structures will be continuously evolved into new compositions going through time coinciding with the progress of the electronic music scene in East Asia in the future.
